ONE LIFE tells the true story of Sir Nicholas ‘Nicky’ Winton, a young London broker who, in the months leading up to World War II, rescued 669 predominantly Jewish children from the Nazis. Nicky visited Prague in December 1938 and found families who had fled the rise of the Nazis in Germany and Austria, living in desperate conditions with little or no shelter and food, and under threat of Nazi invasion. He immediately realised it was a race against time. How many children could he and the team rescue before the borders closed? Fifty years later, it’s 1988 and Nicky lives haunted by the fate of the children he wasn’t able to bring to safety in England; always blaming himself for not doing more. It’s not until a live BBC television show, ‘That’s Life’, surprises him by introducing him to some surviving children – now adults – that he finally begins to come to terms with the guilt and grief he had carried for five decades.

A 1920s English seaside town bears witness to a dark and absurd scandal in this riotous mystery comedy. Based on a stranger than fiction true story, WICKED LITTLE LETTERS follows two neighbours: deeply conservative local Edith Swan and rowdy Irish migrant Rose Gooding. When Edith and fellow residents begin to receive wicked letters full of unintentionally hilarious profanities, foul-mouthed Rose is charged with the crime. The anonymous letters prompt a national uproar, and a trial ensues. However, as the town’s women - led by Police Officer Gladys Moss - begin to investigate the crime themselves, they suspect that something is amiss, and Rose may not be the culprit after all.

Sometimes just with nasty words, some others with the aid of his belt. His cranky father, Ottorino is the only person he respects. The spiteful elder needs round-the-clock care, and Deliais the only one to provide it. The highlight of her day is the time spent with her confidant and dear friend, Marisa. Come springtime, the family is excited about the imminent engagement of their beloved firstborn, Marcella, to her middle-class boyfriend, Giulio. Little do they know that the girl’s greatest hope is to marry fast and finally break free. Delia sees a suitable wedding for her daughter as a life goal. Until one day, a mysterious letter arrives and fires up her courage to overturn all plans and start wishing for a better life, not only for herself.

John Singer Sargent was known as the greatest portrait artist of the late 19th century. Aside from his immense talent, what made his portraits truly remarkable was his choice and depiction of fashion and the complex messages these choices conveyed. His sitters assume elegant stances with the fabric of their dress richly depicted in broad, sensuous strokes. Sargent brought his subjects to life, but he did much more than simply record what appeared before him. He often chose what his sitters wore and, even if they arrived in his studio dressed in the latest fashions, he frequently simplified and altered the details. Exploiting dress was an integral part of his artistry. Filmed at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and the Tate Britain, London, this superb film from Exhibition on Screen details how the exhibition explores the artist’s complex relationship with his often-influential clients, their clothes and their public image.

Alongside 50 paintings by Sargent, several stunning clothes and accessories worn by his sitters appear next to the paintings, drawing the audience into 19th century society and shedding new light on the relationship between fashion and this beloved artist’s creative practice. The exhibition reveals Sargent’s power over his sitters’ images, expressing distinctive personalities, power dynamics and gender identity during this fascinating period of cultural reinvention. This film explores the relationship between artist and subject, examining the hidden meanings simmering beneath the surface of the late Victorian portrait.
